Anytime you have terminal formatting errors, it is due to bypassing the system's ability to identify the terminal properly. This means that the application is executing a system call which operates on "tty" devices. But Hacksaw's original point was that a new user would not know what "not a typewriter" meant. Something like that...

I disagree. "Not a typewriter" is part of Unix tradition, and ought to be retained as a historical reference. BTW, grep does not stand for "Get Regular ExPression." It comes from an often-used command in the ed (and ex and vi) editor: g/re/p. What does this error imply and how can I get past it ?
